Happy spring! Our spring Vävstuga Days is coming up next week (May 10-14, Tuesday-Saturday). This is your one and only opportunity this year to experience this delightful open weaving event. This includes our infamous and lovely afternoon teatime. We have some slots remaining. If you are familiar with our studio, please bring a friend. You can see by our beautiful projects that the Vävstuga elves have out done themselves for your weaving pleasure. No experience is necessary!

Vävstuga Basics has topped the charts once again … there is one spot remaining for this year for this comprehensive class the week of November 7-11.

The latest offering in our series of instructional mini movies, “Measuring the Width of Your Loom”, explains how to determine your loom width. Believe it or not, it is not that simple a task.

Check out our May “Book Preview of the Month” on film, showcasing the beautiful book Rep Weaves, which is recently back in print (available in our Store).

Due to ever increasing demand, we have added a Vävstuga Basics class to our schedule on September 5-9, 2011. Yes, this is Labor Day week but perhaps someone wants to “work” in a beautiful weaving studio during this holiday. The class is filling quickly, so let us know if you are interested.

Becky and John recently came back from a two-week trip to Sweden including a wonderful visit with Doris and Jean Wiklund way up north in Kiruna. Check out the beautiful reindeer we came across while out skiing in the way below 0° weather! The trip also included a superb visit to Holma Hälsinglands, where Margareta gave us a grand tour of where our high quality weaving yarns are produced, as well as side trips to the Dala Horse factory and Insjönsväveri. Come see the goodies we have in our store as a result!

Doris’s book, En Annan Bild av Lappland, is now back in our bookstore (hand carried from Sweden). Becky has now completed the translation of Doris’s second book, Old Swedish Weavings from North to South: A Collection of Everyday Swedish Weavings from 1850 to 1950, which is currently in the process of being printed! We will let you know as soon as this wonderful book becomes available.

Joanne Hall will join us from Montana for the week of April 18–22nd to teach our tapestry and inlay class, Tapestry on 4 Shafts. This course does not require any prerequisites and offers a great deal of information for all levels of weavers. Participants will enjoy a color theory session as well as hands-on use of many of our materials. Check out the updated class description.

The soonest openings for our Vävstuga Basics classes are for the week of November 7–11th.

We have four new Treasures projects being offered in March. Check out our updated Vävstuga Treasures page and its newly reformatted Treasures calendar.

    November 2010

There is quite a bit on our plate for the month, starting with the Art Under the Stars Art Walk on Saturday, November 6th from 5-8 p.m. Our store will open at 1 p.m. so our customers can beat the crowd. Paul and Susan will be greeting customers while Becky and friends will be demonstrating weaving. Make a day of it and get a jump on your holiday shopping.

There are a few openings remaining in Vävstuga Treasures for November 15-19th. Come experience a tranquil time where you will receive individual coaching, one project at a time. This unique opportunity allows you to step beyond your realm of experience, no matter what that level might be. You will be able to work in a concentrated manner on projects you select and Becky will be on hand to assist you as needed. Minimum enrollment is 2 consecutive days. Those remaining for the full 5 days may be able to do one or more projects. You can preview the stunning warps available on our Vävstuga Treasures page.

On November 24th we will begin to take reservations for our week-long open house, Holiday Vävstuga Days. This event is being offered Tuesday through Saturday, December 7-11th. The studio will be open each day from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. and all of our looms will be decked out with festive towels and runners in plain weave. Little or no experience is necessary and ample instruction will be given. This is a terrific opportunity to introduce a friend to the joy of weaving. Each day we’ll host a teatime at 3 p.m. with Swedish cakes and cookies.

The Vävstuga Scholarship Committee will be awarding scholarships for the Vävstuga Basics classes in the first half of 2011. Get your application in by the end of November.

    September 2010

It’s been fun cleaning up and re-arranging our new store/office area since the construction dust has settled. Every once in a while one of us will proclaim, “Oh that is where I put that!” Routines are once again becoming the norm.

Besides the reorganizing of workspace, the month of August had three classes in the studio: Vavstuga Basics, Bands Plain & Fancy and Swedish Rag Rugs. The Bands class was a new offering and a real keeper. We extended the format of the Swedish Rag Rug class to 3-days with rewarding results. Students spent a great deal more time on design, techniques and finishing than in the past.

We are now offering a new item in our store: a Heavy Duty Ball Winder. This American-made workhorse winds a center-pull ball with ease.

The next time you hear from us it will officially be Autumn and with that newsletter we will be publishing our 2011 calendar of classes …. stay tuned!

We know it is mid-August and like our newsletters out the first of each month. Believe us, the wait is worth the beautiful pictures below.

We hung up our freshly painted sign this past Saturday, signifying the end of the construction project. Hooray! Oh sure, there still will be contractors trooping in and out from time to time, but much of the chaos is behind us.

We are officially back in our little storefront with a new part-time employee. Paul Bombardier joined the Vävstuga team earlier this month. With the addition of Paul we now offer store hours from 1-5pm Wednesday through Saturday. As the business grows we look forward to adding more hours and days.

We have a Bands class in process the first part of this week. The eight students are having a blast and learning more about bands than they thought possible.
