They say summer is a time for reading, and we have three new titles to tantalize you. Most excitingly, Becky’s newest translation project is finished! Becky has been working for over three years on the English translation of Doris Wiklund’s book Old Swedish Weavings from North to South, and the book is now available to our customers. We know many of you have been waiting patiently for this fantastic collection of 144 beautifully photographed weavings, all analyzed and drafted out ready for any weaver to use. The numerous stories about the various pieces of weaving give a great insight into the culture and times, making this book enjoyable to just sit down and read. While you’re picking up your copy of Old Swedish Weavings, check out these other two related titles in our Store: Warp & Weft and The Big Book of Flax.

Our first week-long class in rep weave was an inspirational success. You can see in the photograph what our students were able to accomplish in just one week of immersion into this vivid design- and color-inspired technique.

We have a new apprentice, Sarah Easton from Putney, VT.

Last but certainly not least, an absolutely beautiful event took place on Saturday, June 25, 2011. John Marcy and Becky Ashenden were married at Becky’s family home in Shelburne Center, MA. The celebrants included folks from as far away as Sweden. It was a joyful occasion for all. And yes, John wove his shirt material and Becky wove her dress.

May was an exhilarating month with ten fully warped looms for two weeks straight — Vävstuga Days and Alumni Week. It was a blast to see so many you walking out of the building after a day of weaving with a bundle of freshly woven “goods” tucked under your arms.

The Rep Variations class July 18th-22nd will have a spectacular array of warps and is a one-time opportunity to delve into this wonderful weave structure. Vävstuga Basics is not a prerequisite for this particular class, so do take advantage of this. We have two slots available and one dorm room remaining.

The 2012 schedule will be published the last week of September. We will begin to take enrollment at that time.

    Enjoy your summer!

Becky and John recently came back from a two-week trip to Sweden including a wonderful visit with Doris and Jean Wiklund way up north in Kiruna. Check out the beautiful reindeer we came across while out skiing in the way below 0° weather! The trip also included a superb visit to Holma Hälsinglands, where Margareta gave us a grand tour of where our high quality weaving yarns are produced, as well as side trips to the Dala Horse factory and Insjönsväveri. Come see the goodies we have in our store as a result!

    November 2010

There is quite a bit on our plate for the month, starting with the Art Under the Stars Art Walk on Saturday, November 6th from 5-8 p.m. Our store will open at 1 p.m. so our customers can beat the crowd. Paul and Susan will be greeting customers while Becky and friends will be demonstrating weaving. Make a day of it and get a jump on your holiday shopping.

There are a few openings remaining in Vävstuga Treasures for November 15-19th. Come experience a tranquil time where you will receive individual coaching, one project at a time. This unique opportunity allows you to step beyond your realm of experience, no matter what that level might be. You will be able to work in a concentrated manner on projects you select and Becky will be on hand to assist you as needed. Minimum enrollment is 2 consecutive days. Those remaining for the full 5 days may be able to do one or more projects. You can preview the stunning warps available on our Vävstuga Treasures page.

On November 24th we will begin to take reservations for our week-long open house, Holiday Vävstuga Days. This event is being offered Tuesday through Saturday, December 7-11th. The studio will be open each day from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. and all of our looms will be decked out with festive towels and runners in plain weave. Little or no experience is necessary and ample instruction will be given. This is a terrific opportunity to introduce a friend to the joy of weaving. Each day we’ll host a teatime at 3 p.m. with Swedish cakes and cookies.
