Hello friends of Vävstuga and welcome to our new Newsletter subscribers!

We have two lovely and inspiring books to offer you this month! Band weavers take note!

Applesies and Fox Noses: Finnish Tabletwoven Bands

book-kariapples_215x300  This is one of the most instructive manuals we have seen for table woven bands. It includes clear pattern diagrams, instructions,   and beautiful photographs for 30 different bands.

    Traditional Finnish Decorative Bands

th-book-schvtradit  First published in 1903, this book is the most comprehensive publication on tablet weaving of its time. 159 band designs are reproduced in color and techniques that vary from braided bands to tablet-woven bands and pick-up patterned bands using various kinds of rigid heddles. A nice bit of history of the tools used to make this wide selection of bands used in 19th century Finland makes this a very interesting and inspiring book!

June and July were very fun and busy class months here at Vävstuga!

Sagas and Fluff, Swedish Rag Rugs, Bands in the Barn, Treasures, and 3 Basics classes in June.

Sagas and Fluff was a wonderful week of weaving weft-faced wonders! Our week combining Swedish Rag Rugs, Bands in the Barn and even some Treasures projects was a great success out at the Farm Studio. Watch for this to be repeated in June of 2017!

The Summer Weaving Workshop, One-Day-Wonders and The Swedish Kitchen classes in July.

We had a wonderful week weaving with teens during The Summer Weaving Workshop! Join us next year for an all-ages week of weaving, including on the drawloom, plus natural dyes, spinning, and even some maypole dancing, picnics, and fun games on the side. Some adult students joined in that week to weave some One-Day-Wonder towels and runners. It was great having everyone out at the Barn Studio! Weaving for the Swedish Kitchen was also a hoot with rep woven placemats, towels and table squares, and Lisa Hill’s amazing creativity in designing fun and practical pocketed aprons! See Tonya’s below.

There’s still room in classes for some summer and fall 2016 weaving fun!

For our Basics Alumni there are a few spaces left in Swedish Classics, August 15-19 and August 29-September 2 and Nordic Classics, September 26-30

When planning your fall weaving adventures, consider Flamboyant Blankets coming up October 17-20 and Festival of Fabrics, November 28-December 2 and, of course, Treasures December 6-9 and 13-16 – contact us for project availability.

     Stay Tuned for 2017!

Our 2017 Class Schedule is so close to being ready to make public but, needing a few tweaks, we must wait to announce it in the August Newsletter.

Here’s a few hints: you can count on some Basics Classes in January, June/July, and likely December. The 2017 Väv Immersion Program dates will be from the late summer into fall. And we have a NEW CLASS which will feature Vävstuga favorites – and there are so many to choose from! Registration will open after the schedule is posted.

Until then, have a wonderful summer and happy weaving!

Join us at Vävstuga for a great class, visit our store (Tues-Fri 9-3) or our web store any time, come to Library Hours on the first Friday of each month 2-5pm (next is August 5th), and check out our Facebook page and Ravelry group!

    June 2016

    New Rosengång (Rosepath) Book!

book-ostljanuar_298x300 Från Januariblues till Decemberröd – 18 Kuddar i Rosengång by Anna Östlund

A wonderful book with 18 stunning pillows in a rainbow of colors and patterns that match the months of the year. The inspirational rosepath designs woven on opposites are delightful with detailed instructions, beautiful pictures, and a small amount of text in Swedish.

Summer Weaving Workshop – July 11-15th

There is still room in our Summer Weaving Workshop that will take place in our Barn Studio. This would be a great opportunity to weave with a pre-teen or teenage relative or friend, as well as a chance for folks on our Basics waiting lists to get a taste of Vävstuga. You’ll weave on a floor loom, a band loom, and even a replica of a Viking loom. Make a rag rug, a towel or napkin, experience draw loom weaving, natural dying, and spinning. This will be a great week and we hope you’ll join us!

    Swedish Classics – August 15-19 and August 29-September 2

It’s not often that we have space available in a Swedish Classics class! The natural follow-up class to  Vävstuga Basics, you’ll weave monksbelt and rosepath in wool and linen, twill cotton yardage on 8 shafts, a single-ply linen tablecloth, and satin damask in cotton and linen. Call to take one of the few spaces available!

Weave for the Swedish Kitchen – July 19-22

There is only one space left in the wonderful Kitchens class and we wanted to share the color choices for the projects to tempt you. You choose your color, we’ll wind and beam the warp for you. Projects include towels, runners, aprons, pot holders, placemats and/or napkins, in a variety of structures and yarns.

A beautiful new design tool is now available for our wool yarns

yarn-jar-woo-faro_300x300This invaluable new design tool gives you the opportunity to arrange the colors of our yarns in endless combinations.  These precious nuggets of color can be stored safely in your beautifully labeled jar(s), and dumped into a basket or on a table to mix and match at your leisure. Sure to help your creativity and project planning!

Traditional sample cards, with miniscule samples firmly attached in place are increasingly difficult to come by and computer screens vary in how accurately yarn colors are displayed. Our Yarn-In-A-Jar is an excellent solution for your design needs. All seven of our beautiful Swedish wool yarns are now available in their own jars. Our other yarns will become available in this format as well!

Tuna Sock Kit is now online

    Tuna Sock Kit

Our weaving yarns make great KNITTING YARNS!

    Moosey and Socks

Becky’s friend “Moosey” is hard at work knitting up some beautiful socks using our Tuna Wool Sock Kit which includes a great knitting pattern customized for us by Beth Brown-Reinsel of Knitting Traditions in Vermont. We also suggest you try our Åsborya yarn for some great twined mittens.

Yarns designed for weaving tend to have a tighter twist, making them ideal for sturdy and long-lasting knitted goods in traditional styles. Modern knitting yarns tend to be on the softer side, not always best for longevity. If you put in all that work, why not make a product that will last?  Try out our yarns for knitting and let us know what you think!

Our Tuna Sock Kit is available by calling the office at 413-625-8241. It will soon be on our web store as well.

The kit includes the pattern for the socks shown here and 2 skeins of contrasting colors of Tuna yarn. You can see the beautiful colors on our web store, then call to order.

We are proud to announce the arrival of our new Vävstuga beads for our famous tie-up system! Our own strong, hand-tooled beads are now available for both the Countermarch and new Counterbalance conversion kits. Bead packs alone are more economical than texsolv pegs and you can order these items on our web store:

    Vävstuga Loom Bumpers

    Loom Bumber

Our Vävstuga tools department has fashioned yet another item for your weaving convenience.

Our “Loom Bumpers” keep your loom from traveling across the room as you weave.  Those of you who have enjoyed weaving in our studio have already seen how useful these Loom Bumpers are when your loom is located near a wall.

Classes have been rolling along this season, keeping us busy with three Vävstuga Basics classes so far, along with our Väv Immersion program. All of these have been providing wonderful experiences for us, as well as for the students!

Coming up in April: We still have a couple of spots in our Saturday, April 9th Wool Combing Workshop with Gina Gerhard. Call the office to enroll.

In May our focus turns to Drawloom weaving and there are still a few Drawloom & Linen Treasures projects available to our Alumni.

Looking ahead to June: We have space in our Rag Rugs class, June 13-15 and our Bands in the Barn class, June 15-17. Enroll in both and stay for the week!  We’re also offering a Summer Weaving Workshop for ages 10-Adult, July 11-15. Do you know a pre-teen or teen with whom you’d like to share a wonderful week of weaving?!

Our delightful apprentice, Tonya, has also been weaving up a storm! In March she completed several fabulous double weave blankets, a fine cotton “tulip” fabric for an Easter skirt, and a gorgeous Opphämta runner!

They are the most outstanding resource of this kind currently available and we thank Britta for her unique and unparalleled gift to the world!

Britta Johanson is a textile designer/artist and has worked with the visual arts, church textiles, and textile consumer goods for over thirty years.
