August 2011

They say summer is a time for reading, and we have three new titles to tantalize you. Most excitingly, Becky’s newest translation project is finished! Becky has been working for over three years on the English translation of Doris Wiklund’s book Old Swedish Weavings from North to South, and the book is now available to our customers. We know many of you have been waiting patiently for this fantastic collection of 144 beautifully photographed weavings, all analyzed and drafted out ready for any weaver to use. The numerous stories about the various pieces of weaving give a great insight into the culture and times, making this book enjoyable to just sit down and read. While you’re picking up your copy of Old Swedish Weavings, check out these other two related titles in our Store: Warp & Weft and The Big Book of Flax. Mini movie of the month: “Making a sturdy selvedge with string yarn”
Our first week-long class in rep weave was an inspirational success. You can see in the photograph what our students were able to accomplish in just one week of immersion into this vivid design- and color-inspired technique.

We have a new apprentice, Sarah Easton from Putney, VT. Last but certainly not least, an absolutely beautiful event took place on Saturday, June 25, 2011. John Marcy and Becky Ashenden were married at Becky’s family home in Shelburne Center, MA. The celebrants included folks from as far away as Sweden. It was a joyful occasion for all. And yes, John wove his shirt material and Becky wove her dress.
